Xenosemiotics. Toward an Alienist Materialism

چکیده
Abstract Intended as a branch of synthetic biology, xenobiology aims to design and build non-standard life forms, that is constructively venture into biological otherness. According this creative speculative character, it challenges the principles biology itself, which tied fundamentally reductionist approach. Xenobiology does not treat closed code, but rather field ontological innovation; in sense, evokes biosemiotic paradigm accounts for sense-making non-anthropomorphic interactions. Xenobiology, however, can also be intended “divergent” most part astrobiology, namely theory contact with extra-terrestrial life. second meaning, searches speculates on alien biologies. Building these two meanings, paper outline semiotic otherness, or ‘xenosemiotics’, shifts focus from communication morphogenetic information.

An Empirical Case against Materialism
Empirical arguments for materialism are highly circumstantial—based, as they are, upon inductions from our knowledge of the physical and upon the fact that mental phenomena have physical correlates, causes and effects. However, the qualitative characteristics of first-person conscious experience are empirically distinct from uncontroversially physical phenomena in being—at least on our present ...
متن کامل[Neurocosmetics, transhumanism and eliminative materialism: toward new ways of eugenics].
In this paper I present similarities and connections between Transhumanism and Eliminative Materialism. Concretely, I study the arguments with which in both positions it is defended a merely instrumental idea of human body and, because of that, one infinitely mouldable. First, I show the social relevance of this idea and its projections in phenomena as medicalization of human condition and, esp...
متن کاملQuantum Interactive Dualism: An Alternative to Materialism
René Descartes proposed an interactive dualism that posits an interaction between the mind of a human being and some of the matter located in his or her brain. Isaac Newton subsequently formulated a physical theory based exclusively on the material/physical part of Descartes’ ontology. Newton’s theory enforced the principle of the causal closure of the physical, and the classical physics that g...
متن کاملReciprocity, Materialism and Welfare: An Evolutionary Model
This paper analyses preference evolution in a bargaining situation. We show that preferences for reciprocity, that sustain a conflict-free outcome, are viable if players have enough information about opponents’ preferences. However, depending on the initial starting point, preference evolution can in general both enhance or reduce subjective and material welfare, relative to the situation where...
متن کاملAgainst Materialism
Materialism is the idea that human beings are material objects—brains, perhaps, or some part of the brain—without immaterial selves or souls. I give two arguments against materialism. The first is an argument from possibility: it is possible that I should exist when no part of my body exists, in which case I am not identical with my body or any part of my body. The second is an argument from im...
